#11 Fort Harmar and the First American Regiment(Gary Williams and Millie Covey Fry) - The earliest years of Ohio's recorded history were filled with conflict as Americans, Europeans and Native Americas struggled for control of the region. For the white intruders of this era, log forts became the key to survival in this wilderness. The story of Fort Harmar is the story of Ohio's beginnings and features some compelling tales.
#12 Computer Lab Researching Your Civil War Ancestor (Jim Miracle) – This computer lab will give you strategies to discover ancestors and relatives in your family that fought in the Civil War. He will detail internet and other local sources to discover clues to learn about their service, their units and their participation in a struggle that changed our country forever.
#13 Basic Computer Genealogy 101 (Doug Thompson) – Always wanted to use a computer to research your family history, but don’t have a clue how to get started? Just recently started your search, and don’t yet have a good grasp on what button to push on the computer? This introductory course is for you. Learn the basics of computer use, data input and saving documents. This class is geared more to beginner/novice computer users.
#14 DNA as a Genealogy Research Tool (Harley Dakin) - The Cline Family case study. Why use DNA Analysis?DNA Test – What, When, Where and How. DNA testing hints for the amateur. #15 Native American Archeology in Washington County (Wes Clarke) – "Topics will include the history and prehistory of the Marietta Earthworks, including recent new discoveries in the earthworks locality."
#21 Governor Arthur St. Clair, “The Unappreciated Patriot.” (Dick Phillips) A giant among giants, Arthur St.Clair gave everything he was and everything he had to the freedom and development of his adopted country, only to die an unappreciated pauper. Learn all about Ohio’s first Territorial Governor.
#22 Black Soldiers of the Revolution and Civil Wars (Henry Burke) – From the life of black soldier Bazel Norman in the Revolutionary War to the Ordinance of 1787 (which prohibited slavery) which created the Northwest Territory, through the Underground Railroad of the Ohio Valley to the local Black History in the Civil War, this class will discuss them all.
#23 The Internet and Genealogical Research (Panel discussion; John McClure and Scott Britton) Discussion and use of various genealogy web sites, ancestry.com, wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com, LDS sites and others. Some basic shortcuts will be shown in this computer lab assisted presentation.
#24 Computer Lab Computer Genealogy Shortcuts (Beverly Schumacher) - This computer lab focuses on the shortcuts to your genealogy research.
#25 Research Tips for Your Family History Book (Phil Crane) - The author traces the steps in the preparation of his family history book: "Most Distinguished Characters of the American Frontier - Children of Robert Looney", (written by Phil Crane and his mother, Madge Looney Crane). The class will cover source documents, hand drawn maps and details of publishing your family history.
Free Lunch and Exhibits - Lunch is included with your registration fee. There are 5 choices of subs and salads from Subway®. Various groups will have exhibits to view and will be staffed to answer any questions about various historical, genealogy & heritage societies in the area.
#31 The Sandusky-Muskingum Indian Trail, Fort Harmar to Upper Sandusky (Richard Walker) - The trail led from Fort Harmar to Luke Chute via where CR4 crosses Rainbow Creek, to Pennsville, Crooksville, Hebron, Batemanstown, Galion, and Bucyrus. This class presents research of original surveyor's maps, surveyor’s records and local history of the region. The translation of trail locations onto modern topographical maps will also be displayed.
#32 Washington County Civil War History (Scott Britton) - This class will be heavily story-oriented regarding men on both sides of this conflict. Some are humorous, some tragic and still others that are inspirational. Learn some of the more interesting and remarkable tales of some of our local famous and infamous citizens who changed our country’s history during a period that split our nation and pitted brother against brother.
#33 Basic Computer Genealogy 102 (Doug Thompson) - This computer genealogy class picks up from the very basic computer beginner class, but focuses on the different computer operations and programs so you can begin to utilize them based on your genealogical research needs. This class is geared more to beginner/novice computer users.
#34 Finding My Roots. Where Do I Begin? (Debbie Noland Nitsche) - Beginning genealogy for all ages. Learn the basics about how and where to start researching your ancestors. Basic terms used in genealogy, various spellings in surnames, free & pay genealogy websites, how to compile everything and much more! Handouts & individual assistance will be available.
#35 George Washington, Father of our Country (Dick McAllister) - A brief look at the man and his accomplishments. Unlike other, mostly antidotal, reflections on the incidentals aspects in the life George Washington, this overview of his life attempts to establish the development of his character. This forum is a starting point for those who wish to know who the great man was and what he achieved.
#41 Rufus Putnam, Father of Ohio and Chief Engineering Officer of the Continental Army (Bill Reynolds) – Attendees will learn about the leader of the Ohio Company settlers, from his early childhood, to his military experience and eventually the opening of the American Frontier.
#42 Washington County Civil War Graves Registration Projects (Scott Britton) – He will give an overview of various efforts by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Sons of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Revolution to identify and catalog the final resting places of Military Veterans buried or memorialized in cemeteries in Washington County. Find out what information is being collected, what information is currently available for research and who you can assist with this project.
#43 Uniforms and Equipment of the Civil War (Kyle Yoho) – Discover the various uniforms and equipment that were used by your ancestor during the Civil War. What parts of their uniform were standard issue for most units and what were used to make one unit distinctive from another. What did the infantry, cavalry, artillery, etc. use that other branches did not and much more.
#44 Research to Join Patriotic and Lineage Societies (Beverly Schumacher) - Learn how to compile and complete an application for any hereditary society. Learn how to check it to be certain you have everything you need and submit it in the correct order. When do you need original documents? When can you substitute a copy of a copy of a copy? What if you don't have a marriage record? Do you highlight or underline? Do you sign in blue ink or black magic marker? Do you write on the front or the back of your documents? The main purpose is to get the application approved with the least amount of aspirin. If she doesn't have the answer, she'll get it for you!
#45 Local History and Genealogy Resources in the Marietta College Library (Linda Showalter) - The Special Collections at the Marietta College Library includes rare books, manuscripts, photographs, and other historical materials. Linda recently served as project archivist in preparing the Manuscripts and Documents of the Ohio Company of Associates for preservation and digitization. Learn what is available for research, what has been found in the preparing materials for storage while a new library is being built and how this process will improve research opportunities in the future.
#51 The Massacre at Big Bottom and the Demolition of Fort Harmar in 1791: The Untold Connection (Richard Walker) - For more than 200 years the only response to the massacre at Big Bottom has been to blame the victims for lax defenses. That's a cover-up. This class presents an examination of Ohio Company records, Governor St. Clair's correspondence, and President Washington's flawed Indian policy. Where were the soldiers when they were needed? Why were St. Clair, Sargent, and Harmar all absent at the same time? Putnam was outraged. Examine documents that reveal the dilemma of the cost of protecting frontier settlers versus the profit of expanding perimeter outposts.
#52 Wood County Genealogy Research (Jim Miracle) – This experienced researcher who has been President of the West Augusta Historical Society will talk about how Wood County resources dating back to West Augusta county before the Revolutionary War. From its rich Civil War heritage and leadership in West Virginia’s statehood to its significant industrial and Oil & Gas history, there are many trails to follow to successfully track down your ancestors in Wood County.
#53 The Archives and Museum Collection of the Washington County Historical Society (Ken Finkel) - Using Powerpoint and Video clips, Ken will present a fresh look at the vast and varied collection of the society, including current projects and historical properties maintained. From the priceless local documents, to the Fearing House and Anchorage to current projects, there is a lot to see.
#54 Computer Lab Southeast Ohio on the Web(Eric Richendollar) - This computer lab on Southeast Ohio genealogy will include online demonstrations of the Web sites Cyndi’s List, Linkpendium, Ohio Genealogical Society and individual chapter Web sites, the Ohio Historical Society including the Ohio Death Certificate Index and the Ohio Memory Project, the Digital Shoebox project of images of southeastern Ohio, the Family Search labs project which includes digitized images of all Ohio death certificates from 1908 to 1953, local mailing lists, some free censuses available online, and sites with free digitized local history and genealogy books: Google books, BYU digital collections, and HeritageQuest Online.
