The lecture will focus on the roles of George Washington and Rufus Putnam in opening the Ohio country for settlement. In May, 1783, Rufus Putnam sent a petition to Congress suggesting uses for land west of the Ohio River leading to the signing of the Ordinance of 1787 allowing the settlement under a Territorial government. Throughout this process, Putnam and Washington shared a long dialog of their hopes and wishes for this new venture. These letters reveal the building stones for what would become present day Marietta.
