April 1 through 17, 2011 - Weekdays: 10:00am – 4:00pm, The Castle, Civil War Special Exhibit
The Castle opens for its 18th season. Colonel Melvin C. Clarke, one of three Civil War veterans who would call the Castle his home, built in 1855.  Clarke would be killed on September 17, 1862 while leading his men on a charge near Burnside's Bridge at the Battle of Antietam. Clarke's son Joseph (148th OVI) would also be killed later in the war in an explosion, an act of sabotage by a Confederate spy at City Point, Virginia. Starting April 1, The Castle will have a special Civil War exhibit featuring some never before seen photographs of local soldiers, officer's desks, extremely rare Union Navy artifacts, one-of-a-kind documents and ledgers from the 36th & 148th Ohio Infantries and much more. We will even have the honor of welcoming back to this museum the original flag staff carried by Colonel Clarke's 36th Ohio. Come to The Castle as we commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the start of the Civil War.  Museum Tours: $6 for Adults, $5.50 for Seniors, $3 for Students.  Free for Veterans (with ID).  April 7 & 9: $1 off admission.

The Castle, built in 1855 by Marietta Lawyer and abolitionist, Colonel Melvin Clarke, welcomes John Parker for an afternoon visit.  The public is invited to join this former slave, Underground Railroad Conductor, Inventor and Entrepreneur as he shares his thoughts of the current unrest (in 1861) and the challenges he has faced in his life.  Reservations recommended.  Admission: $10 for Adults, $5 for students.
